Decade Of Crafts
Bridgewater Business Celebrates 10 Years
This February marks a crafty 10-year anniversary for Judy Galang and her gift shop, Cottage Crafts, located on South Main Street in Bridgewater.
The owner of several properties on Main Street, Galang says the building that is now her gift shop “was once the first bank in Bridgewater, built in 1867.” The property, located next door to her home, was in need of serious renovations in order to be saved from demolition. She could not bear to see it torn down, she said, so she made the decision to upgrade: The building was rebuilt using mostly original materials.
A crafter since she was a teenager, Galang began creating after having children.
The functional pieces she made for her kids caught the eyes of others.
“At their ball games, I would knit and people would come up to me and ask me to make them something — it gave me such a good feeling,” she said.
Her children have since grown, but her crafting continued.
Galang describes the shop, which opened in February 2003, as “part of [her] past and present.”
The walls display her hard work: From ornaments, to hair accessories, hats, tissue boxes, towel holders, brooches, scarves, and more, there is not an item in the shop that has not been touched by Galang.
Galang snickers as she tells her secret to maintaining the business for 10 years; “I own the building, so I don’t have to pay rent!”
Cottage Crafts does not have regular hours of operation: Since Galang lives next door, she opens the shop when browsers stop by. If interested in shopping, give her a call at (540) 828-3718 or drop by 291 S. Main St. in Bridgewater.
