'Chicken 'N' Pickin' ' Jamboree
Weyers Cave Ruritan Club To Host Bluegrass Festival
With lots of fried chicken and fixin’s, bluegrass pickin’, a youth talent show and plenty of jammin’, the Weyers Cave Ruritan Club plans to host its 5th annual Chickin’ and Pickin’ Bluegrass Fest..
The fundraising festivities begin March 23 at 10 a.m. at the Weyers Cave Community Center. Open mic is from 11-1 p.m. and bands will perform from 1-9 p.m.
“We will have lots of fried chicken — that’s where the ‘Chickin’ and Pickin’ ’ comes from,” says Tom Wilkerson, committee chairman.
Along with the chicken will be sides to complete the meal including mac and cheese, beans and tons of snacks, desserts, and drinks — all non-alcoholic.
Activities On Tap
Four bands will also perform — Dark Hollow, Shenandoah Drive, West Wind and Thompson’s Store Revival.
“The bands will be alternating all day, starting at 1 p.m. and, this year, we’ve added a talent show for youths 18 or younger for a single-talent competition that will be worked in between the bands,” says Wilkerson.
“At about 8 p.m., we will hold a vote and give away gift certificates for the best talent.
“We also have a 50/50 prize drawing by popular demand, and we encourage visitors to ‘jam’ throughout the building all day,” says Cindy Kline, coordinator of the event.
She explains that there has been wide interest in local sponsorship for the event.
Among the contributing sponsors are Augusta Co-op, Christopher Williams, Houff Feed and Fertilizer, IDM Trucking, Rocky’s Gold and Silver, Stoneburner, as well as other local businesses.
“We have several fundraisers throughout the year, but [‘Chickin’ and Pkickin’ ’] is one of our larger ones,” says Kline.
“We have to do fundraisers throughout the year to raise money to give back to the community — the food pantry, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts — whoever needs help,” says Wilkerson.
“We always did barbecue chicken in summertime, but we needed something during the wintertime to boost our fundraising.
“Our club is always good at producing food, but we needed something to go with it — that’s how we came up with the Bluegrass Fest.”
“It’s a good lineup of bands — anybody that likes bluegrass and food, it will be a great day,” says Wilkerson.
