Despite being a self-proclaimed “fair addict,” Tom Eshelman doesn’t have a favorite ride or activity. As the general manager of the Shenandoah County Fair, he says his “icing on the cake” is simply watching others enjoy the festivities.
“I just love seeing people have a good time each day,” he remarked. “I love to see the fair experience – watching kids come in with their moms and dads or grandparents.”
However, those who prefer to partake in the fun will have no shortage of options. Rides, such as a Ferris wheel and merry go round, will be offered everyday, as will a free-of-charge mobile Civil War museum. A large line-up of entertainers, such as last year’s X-Factor winner Tate Stevens and the country duo Thompson Square, are scheduled to perform on various evenings.
According to Thompson Square member Keifer Thompson, the duo will be performing a mix of hits from their albums “Thompson Square” and “Just Feels Good.” Thompson has high hopes for the shows.
“The fans are the reason we’re out here doing what we’re doing — we do all this for them,” he remarked. “They’ve given us this dream and this reality, so it’s our job to give back and we’re doing the best we can.”
Additionally, food will be available from more than 20 vendors. According to Eshelman, barbecue lovers in particular should be in heaven.
“We have a ton of barbecue — we got barbecue everywhere,” he said.
Those with a sweet tooth won’t be left out either, as the menu includes funnel cakes, fried Oreos, donuts, and cotton candy.
“Not a lot of healthy [items],” Eshelman acknowledged, adding that fair-goers are unlikely to see many empty salad containers littered on the ground. “But if there were, it wouldn’t be a fair!”
