Autumn Days Upon Us
Annual Broadway Craft Show Features Local, International Vendors
On Sept. 14, the annual Broadway Autumn Days Craft Show will be held on Broadway’s Main Street.
The event features 140 vendors, and offers a variety of crafts, including candles, gourmet soaps and lotions, blankets and clothes, baskets, artwork, jewelry, rugs, and wooden items.
According to co-coordinator Karen Klasnick, a self-declared “craft show junkie,” all the items are hand crafted.
“[The items] are one of a kind, you can meet the person who made them,” she said. “It’s not something that was made … on an assembly line.”
Klasnick praises the high-quality work of the merchants, and says the event provides a great opportunity to get a head start on holiday shopping.
“I do 90 percent of my Christmas shopping at our craft show,” she remarked.
While the show originally only hosted local vendors, Klasnick says the event has grown, now drawing artisans from all over the Commonwealth of Virginia, as well as a few out-of-staters.
In the last few years, organizers have also added an international touch. African banana leaf art, South American shoes and handbags, and Haitian woodwork and jewelry will be available for purchase at this year’s show.
Besides the crafts, there will also be a children’s play area, featuring an inflatable moon bounce, a gold-fish toss, sand art and face painting.
Additionally, musical performances will be provided by Robert Reedy & the Ole Time Pickers and Mean Mary — whom Klasnick calls an “incredible banjoist.”
While Klasnick — along with her fellow co-coordinator Brenda Whitmore — spends all year planning the event, she says it’s well worth the effort.
“It’s just a wonderful day to visit Broadway,” she remarked. “It makes me proud of the town.”
