Halloween Events Planned
HARRISONBURG — A pair of city-sponsored Halloween events will take place in Harrisonburg later this month.
On Oct. 27, Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance, the downtown revitalization group, will host Halloween on the Square. It will take place on Court Square from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Activities include music, a photo booth, arts, crafts and hay rides, according to HDR. Costume contests for adults, children and pets are included in the event, sponsored by Hess Orthopedics.
Several downtown businesses will hand out candy from noon to 2 p.m. Participating shops will have an orange balloon outside their building.
The following day, the Harrisonburg Parks and Recreation Department will host a similar event at the Cecil F. Gilkerson Community Activities Center on South Dogwood Drive. From 2-4 p.m., games, crafts and a costume contest are planned, officials say.
As for traditional trick-or-treating, the city does not designate a particular evening or time for the activity, as some localities do, though Halloween itself — Oct. 31 — is traditionally the night on which most ghouls, goblins, princesses and pirates go out in search of treats. Halloween falls on a Wednesday this year.
