The national community service project Socks for Seniors is looking for at least one local sponsor to take on the annual Sock Drive, which runs through Christmas.
Last year, the project collected roughly 25,000 pairs of new socks for the elderly throughout more than 250 cities.
Socks for Seniors is still searching for a local area coordinator to help with the project, according to coordinator Jamie Coyne. It begins, he says, with one.
“It starts with one box, one person and one location,” he said, explaining that the national project would help a local coordinator find a final destination for the socks if he or she doesn’t have one in mind.
All socks collected locally will stay in the local community.
Coyne started the organization about 12 years ago when he noticed a need for warm socks at a nursing home in Ohio where he was volunteering.
That first year was “by no means organized,” he said, but it’s become very structured since then — not to mention much more far-reaching.
