Page Loses, 72-36

MECHANICSVILLE – Over the course of a remarkable postseason run, Page County High School girls’ basketball coach Carrie Owens has been referring to her group as a “sleeper team.”

Undefeated powerhouse Brunswick gave the Panthers a rude awakening Saturday at Hanover High School.

The Bulldogs – led by Myneshia Walker’s game-best 24 points – needed a little over three minutes of action to score the first 15 points in their Region 2A East semifinal game with Page and rolled to a 72-36 victory.

Owens, though, drew solace from her team’s lack of quit in the face of Brunswick’s swarming full-court press.

The Panthers (12-13), who upset top-seeded R.E. Lee and second-seeded Bruton to advance to Saturday’s semifinal, pulled to within 40-23 early in the third before Brunswick closed the period on a 17-4 spurt.

“The main thing is I saw fire in their eyes still with two minutes left,” said Owens, whose team was led in scoring by senior guard Morgan Andrew (14 points) and freshman forward Laney Corbin (12). “They were determined. It ticked ’em off that [Brunswick] kept pressing, and so I was just proud of the fire. They didn’t quit.”
