Bridgewater Wins In 10
Eagles Top W&L 5-3 In ODACs
LYNCHBURG — Tyler Hoffman drove in Brendan Howell on a groundball in the bottom of the 10th inning to give third-seeded Bridgewater College a 5-4 win over No. 4 Washington & Lee in the first round of the six-team Old Dominion Athletic Conference baseball tournament Thursday at City Stadium.
The Eagles, who advanced to play No. 5 Lynchburg today at 6 p.m., improved to 27-11; the Generals fell to 18-12.
Hoffman, a senior catcher, finished 1-for-3, and Ryan Leake, Zach Hynes and Ryan Fitzgerald (he went 3-for-4 with an RBI) each had a double for BC, which hasn’t won an ODAC title since 2010.
The Eagles blew a 4-1 lead in the top of the ninth when W&L scored three runs on a Ryan Weston three-run home run to make it 4-4 and send the game to extra innings.
In the bottom of the 10th, BC loaded the bases with one out after Howell singled, Hynes doubled and Darren Yoder was intentionally walked. Then, Hoffman hit a groundball that glanced off the pitcher’s glove. That scored Howell from third.
Nick Corbin pitched nine innings for the Eagles. He gave up four runs (three earned) and struck out seven.
