BRIDGEWATER – Dealing with heavy traffic inside against Turner Ashby High School’s zone defense, Broadway’s Heather Cantrell did as much passing as shooting Tuesday night.

Finding junior teammate Madyson Alger open on the outside was a particularly good option.

Alger nailed five of the team’s seven 3-pointers – at least one in each quarter – and ended up with 16 points to lead the Gobblers to a 60-26 rout of TA, finishing their regular season 16-4 overall and 10-2 in the Valley District.

Asked about Alger’s hot perimeter shooting after the game, BHS coach Bobby Mongold leaned in and offered one piece of criticism.

“She did miss one free throw,” Mongold said wryly.

Not to be outdone by her coach, Alger was also a touch critical despite Broadway’s dominating performance, shooting 21-for-45 (47 percent) from the floor.

“I feel like we can do better,” Alger said. “But we’re playing pretty good because we’re a well-rounded team.”

Cantrell still managed to score 10 of her 15 points in the second half. Freshman point guard Kierstin Roadcap was the third dimension, providing the initial spark with steals and fastbreak layups. She finished with 12 and junior forward Brianna Zook added nine.

“The past two games, we’ve shot the lights out of the ball,” Cantrell said. “When we’re on, we’re on.”

The Gobblers took a commanding 15-4 lead after the first quarter and outscored TA 20-2 in the third, forcing 28 turnovers overall.

“Some of that was just a product of not enough of us playing hard enough,” TA coach Rob Lovell said. “… Our lack of any kind of urgency defensively over too many stretches of the game was disappointing.”

Senior guard Kaitlin Keeley and freshman guard Sydney Sheffer each had seven points to pace the Knights (2-18, 1-10).
