HCPS Trying To Get Word Out About App

SchoolWay Provides Alerts About Division

HARRISONBURG — Harrisonburg City Public Schools is trying to get more parents and students using a new smartphone app that provides emergency information, school news, lunch menus and more.

HCPS is one of only three public school divisions in Virginia using SchoolWay; two private schools also use it.

The division tried out the app last year, according to Alan Quimby, acting director of technology, but is now starting to push for more users.

“We’ve been pretty pleased with it,” he said.

The app, previously called SchoolConnect, provides divisionwide and school-specific news, emergency alerts, contact information for employees and schools, the school calendar and more.

For example, app users signed up for notifications received alerts on Thursday about the Harrisonburg High School home football game the following day, and the dance for seventh- and eighth-grade students at Thomas Harrison Middle School.

School clubs and organizations can create pages for the app to send notifications as well, Quimby said.

It is available for free in the Apple App Store and as an Android app on Google Play. The information is also accessible on the Web for other devices at myschoolway.com/HarrisonburgCityVA.
