ERHS’s Nickels Advance
 
MANASSAS PARK
– Senior Ryan Nickel finished second in two events, leading the East Rockingham High School swim team to a seventh-place finish at the Region B swim meet Saturday at Manassas Park High School.

Nickel swam the 50 freestyle in 23 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 51.66 seconds, qualifying for the Group AA/A state meet in both events this weekend in Christiansburg.

Also qualifying for states was freshman Kyle Nickel, Ryan’s brother. Kyle Nickel finished third in both the 200 individual medley (2 minutes, 10.78 seconds) and the 100 butterfly (1:00.69).

The boys’ 200 freestyle relay team of Ryan Nickel, Kyle Nickel, junior Will Bullis and senior Chris Schilling swam a personal-best time of 1:40.88, finishing third.

George Mason won the meet, scoring 207 points.


ERHS Wrestling Qualifies Three

STRASBURG
– Sophomore David Kisling took third place in the 285-pound weight class, helping East Rockingham High School tie for 10th place at the two-day Region B wrestling meet that concluded Saturday at Strasburg High School.

The Eagles scored 82 points, tied with Wilson Memorial and well back of Strasburg (190).

Senior Dyland Cook finished fourth at 113 pounds and sophomore Daniel Shifflett was fourth at 170. Kisling, Cook and Shifflett all qualified for the Group A state meet this weekend in Salem.


EMHS Girls Win, 65-39

MARTINSVILLE
— Junior forward Emily DePoy had 14 points to lead Eastern Mennonite High School to a 65-39 win over Carlisle in a Blue Ridge Conference girls’ basketball game Saturday.

Eighth-grade forward Lauren Weaver had 12 points, while junior guard Alex Black and junior guard Lauren D’Agostino each added 11 for the Flames.

EMHS is 15-4 overall, 5-1 in the BRC; Carlisle’s record was not available.

Freshman guard Kyndal Allred paced Carlisle with 12.

BC Third In ODAC Swimming

GREENSBORO, N.C
. – Bridgewater College’s 400-yard freestyle relay team placed second to help the Eagles to a third-place finish in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference women’s swim championships Sunday at Greensboro Aquatic Center, the best showing in the program’s six-year history.

The relay team swam the distance in 3 minutes, 40.36 seconds.

The Eagles scored 412 points, edging fourth-place Emory & Henry by four. Washington & Lee scored 1,000 points to win the meet.

BC’s Fran Smith was named the conference Coach of the Year. It was the first honor for Smith, a 1971 Turner Ashby High School graduate who coached the Knights’ swim team from 2004-06 before becoming BC’s first swim coach.
