MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Freshman Jailyn Ford struck out a school-record 16 and pitched her fourth shutout of the season to lead James Madison to a 2-0 win over Coastal Carolina in a non-conference softball game Sunday in a tournament at Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The Dukes, who have won five straight, improved to 14-6; the Chanticleers fell to 12-11.

Ford (6-1) allowed just three base runners (two hits and a walk) and broke Meredith Felts’ single-game strikeout record of 15, set on March 25, 2009, against George Washington.

Megan Shinaberry homered and had two RBIs for JMU, which beat Georgetown 10-1 and Middle Tennessee State 8-2 on Saturday.


JMU Sweeps Hofstra

HARRISONBURG — Tyler Duke hit a grand slam, his second home run of the weekend, and went 2-for-4 with five RBIs to lead James Madison to a 10-6 win over Hofstra in a Colonial Athletic Association baseball game Sunday at Veterans Memorial Park.

With a three-game weekend sweep, the Dukes improved to 9-6 overall, 3-0 in the CAA; the Pride fell to 3-11, 0-3.

Conner Brown went 3-for-5, and Chad Carroll went 2-for-5 with two RBIs for JMU, which beat Hofstra 12-11 and 18-6 in a doubleheader Saturday.

BC Baseball Sweeps Va. Wesleyan: Nick Fulk went 4-for-5 with a triple and three RBIs to lead Bridgewater College to a 10-9 win over Virginia Wesleyan in the second game of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday in Virginia Beach.

The first-place Eagles, who won the first game 7-5, improved to 9-1 overall, 4-0 in the ODAC; the Marlins fell to 4-12, 1-3.

Andrew Hacker also went 4-for-5 for BC, while Ryan Smith and Zach Hynes each had two hits for BC in the second game.

Hynes went 3-for-4 in the first game. Smith (2-for-4) and Hacker (2-for-5) each had two RBIs in Game 1.
