BRIDGEWATER – Senior guard Austin Phares led four Gobblers in double figures with 27 points as sixth-seeded Broadway High School defeated No. 3 seed Turner Ashby 69-55 in the Valley District tournament boys’ quarterfinals Saturday in Bridgewater.

The Gobblers, who advance to play second-seeded Fort Defiance at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Spotswood High School, improved to 8-13; the Knights fell to 14-9.

This is the final year for the Valley District tournament and the event does not count in the Virginia High School League’s new playoff system. It is essentially an exhibition tourney, and Valley schools have decided to discontinue it after this season. The new system – which begins with conference tournaments – gets under way next week.

Senior guard Shane Brown led TA with 23 points Saturday.

Also Saturday, fifth-seeded R.E. Lee defeated No. 4 Waynesboro 53-45. Junior guard Chance Sheffey scored 25 points, going 20-for-24 at the foul line, to lead the Leemen, who advance to play top-seeded Spotswood (22-0) in the semifinals Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Penn Laird.

SHS had a bye in the quarterfinals.

Fort advanced after beating Harrisonburg 71-46 on Saturday at TA. Junior guard Brendan Crowe scored 23 points, and the Indians made five of their eight 3-pointers in the first quarter.

Junior forward Chris Whitelow paced HHS with 12 points.
