BROADWAY—Have you seen the “big chair” on Atlantic Avenue in Broadway? This chair is 7 feet 9 inches tall, 5 feet 4 inches wide, and weighs a whopping 400 pounds.

The chair has proudly been placed in J. and Brenda Whitmore’s garden, and has become talk of the town. J. and Brenda are generously letting people take pictures while sitting on their chair.

Doug Fawley, of Broadway, made the chair from pressure-treated lumber, so it will last a long time.

J. came up with the idea and surprised Brenda shortly after Mother’s Day. Brenda was driving to her house when she first saw this amazing present. The thought that went through her head was, “What’s that?”

There have also been some different responses from friends, family, and neighbors:

“You have a big chair!”

“When is the Green Giant coming by?”

“Is this J.’s time-out chair?”

“Can my family take a picture using it?”

If the chair gets dirty, Brenda or J. will hose it down, but usually Mother Nature cleans it herself.

Brenda loves the chair and plans to keep it in her garden. She also has three granddaughters—Rachel, 7, Abby, 4, and Leah, 2—who enjoy sitting in it for a while every time they come to the house.

The Big Chair is Broadway’s newest tourist attraction.
