HARRISONBURG — Despite an increase in collections during the month of July, there remains an urgent need for blood and platelet, according to the local American Red Cross.

The Red Cross reported that the number of blood donors increased roughly 7.5 percent through the end of July, but a particular need for donors with blood types O negative, B negative and A negative remains.

The group is also requesting donations for platelets — an important clotting element.

Those in the Harrisonburg area wishing to donate can do so today at the Heart and Vascular Center at Sentara RMH, 2010 Health Campus Drive, from noon until 4 p.m., and again on Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Future collections will be held Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. at Kline’s Dairy Bar, 2425 S. Main St., Harrisonburg, and again from noon until 4 p.m. Aug. 29 at the Heart and Vascular Center.
