Boot Camp On Tap For 4-H And FFA

Posted: February 5, 2014

HARRISONBURG — An informational event called “Boot Camp” geared toward 4-H and FFA members interested in showing market animals will be held this weekend.

But, it’s also a family event open to the general community, said Dara Booher, the Rockingham County 4-H agent with Virginia Cooperative Extension.

The second annual Boot Camp will take place Saturday at the Rockingham County Fairground’s exhibit hall from 2 to 6:30 p.m.

The showing of goats, hogs, steers, lambs and poultry will be covered during the event. Vendors will include feed representatives, breeders, equipment dealers and animal-health specialists.

“All of the vendors and learning stations will be tailoring it from a youth perspective,” Booher said. “It will be too basic ... for the average farmer that raises beef cattle.”

She added: “We will have sample tack boxes and what to bring to show your animal, but also we will be talking about how much your animal needs to weigh when you buy it, so you can make it to market weight.”
