BRCC Scare False Alarm

Suspicious Bag Causes Evacuation

Posted: April 23, 2013

HARRISONBURG — Students were evacuated from a Blue Ridge Community College building at the Weyers Cave campus after a bag was found in a suspicious location Monday afternoon.

About 3:30 p.m., 100 to 200 students were evacuated from the school’s Fine Arts Center after a bag was found in a stairwell, said Bridget Baylor, BRCC spokeswoman.

“It wasn’t somewhere that someone would normally drop a backpack for a quick minute,” Baylor said.

After the bag was reported, school officials evacuated several classes of students and called 911, Baylor said.

The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office responded to investigate and determined there was no threat, and students were allowed back in the building after about 45 minutes.

“I think because of recent events, everyone’s trying to be abundantly cautious,” Baylor said. “And we would encourage that.”
