HARRISONBURG — Bridgewater police arrested a Harrisonburg man on Friday in connection with Thursday night’s stabbing at a poultry plant in town.
Iyad Jawad al Shammari, 23, is charged with felony attempted murder and felony malicious wounding. He is being held without bond at the Rockingham County Jail.
Emergency personnel responded to Perdue Farms on Quality Street shortly after 7 p.m. for a report of a stabbing during a dispute among three employees.
Lt. John Dodd said Shammari stabbed Elias Gutierrez, 26, of Bridgewater, multiple times. Dodd also said that the victim’s brother, Jose A. Camarena Gutierrez, 29 also of Bridgewater, was also injured in the attack, but was not stabbed. AirCare 5, a medical helicopter, landed nearby and flew Elias Gutierrez to the University of Virginia Medical Center. Police say he underwent surgery and is in stable condition.
Jose Gutierrez was taken to Sentara RMH Medical Center where he was treated for minor injuries and released.
The suspect also received minor injuries and was taken to RMH and released.
Dodd said the dispute started after the suspect was talking to a family member of the brothers. He declined to say what the conversation was about, citing the ongoing investigation.
