Farmers and Merchants Bank representatives presented Broadway officials with a check at a groundbreaking ceremony April 25 for the future site of the Broadway Farmer’s Market. The $10,000 check will help purchase the lot at the intersection of Main and Rock streets.
“Our bank has thrived for over 100 years in the Valley because of the loyal customers who bank with us in each community,” said
Farmers and Merchants Bank President and CEO Dean Withers in a press release. “As part of our commitment back to these communities, we look for ways we can help stimulate the local economy.”
The market has been operating in the parking lot of Dr. Donald Rellins' office. The new location will provide a permanent home and additional green space to the town.
In addition to the funding for the bank, the town received a $100,000 grant from the United States Department of Agriculture for improvements to the lot.
Construction, which is anticipated to begin this week, will be supervised by the town’s Maintenance Manager Chad M. Dellinger.
The project will be finalized by early summer.
However, original plans that included a pavilion are no longer being considered.
The Farmer’s Market is open every Saturday during the growing season.
