State police officers inspect a Ford Expedition and a tractor-trailer that were involved in a fatal collision on Interstate 81 south of Weyers Cave late Thursday night. The SUV’s driver, Daniel R. Manso Jr. of New York, was killed in the collision, which police said was triggered by a single-vehicle wreck involving a pickup truck. The pickup’s driver, Samuel J. A Ford Expedition rests on its side after it was struck by the tractor-trailer south of Weyers Cave Thursday night. The Expedition, headed in the northbound lane, swerved to avoid a pickup truck that ran off into the median, and was struck by the northbound tractor-trailer, killing the Expedition’s driver.
The pickup truck that police said started the chain-reaction crash sits upside-down in the median. Police said the pickup’s driver, Samuel J. Russo Jr. of Harrisonburg, fled the scene. The Expedition swerved to avoid the pickup’s wreckage and went out of control. It was struck by the tractor-trailer.
