Christmas Comes To New Market
The town of New Market is gearing up for the annual daylong Christmas celebration on Saturday.
“Christmas in New Market” kicks off at 9 a.m. when businesses along Congress Street open their doors for an open house.
“It’s mostly just [for the community] to meet the owners of the shops,” said Lisa Hirsh, of the New Market Chamber of Commerce.
The parade, which begins at 5 p.m., will feature entries from fire departments, rescue squads, musical groups and other organizations from throughout Shenandoah County. The Stonewall Jackson High School marching band will perform at the parade for the first time this year.
John Blosser, parade chairman, said he’s unsure how many groups will be represented this year, as there is no registration.
“We just line them up when they get there,” he said.
Prizes will be doled out to the “best appearing” group in seven categories at the end of the parade.
A tree-lighting ceremony will commence in front of town hall at 5:30 p.m. The fir tree has been growing on the property for about four years.
Santa Claus will pay a visit to the New Market Library at 5:30 p.m. as well.
New this year will be a dinner theater performance of “Murder at the Prom” at Schultz Theatre, 9357 N. Congress St., at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets for the performance must be purchased in advance and are $25 for adults and $20 for students and seniors. The price includes dinner and the show.
