HARRISONBURG — The city will treat children to a pair of organized Halloween events this weekend.

On Saturday, Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance will host the 10th annual Halloween on the Square at Court Square. The event, sponsored by Hess Orthopaedic Center and Sports Medicine and MedExpress, runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will feature 30 businesses offering trick-or-treating between noon and 2 p.m.

From 10 a.m. to noon, activities will include face painting, balloon animals, story time, caricature drawing, costume contests and more, according to a press release.

The event is a pet-friendly one. Well-behaved and leashed dogs are encouraged to come in costume, and the Rockingham/Harrisonburg SPCA will have a selection of adoptable dogs.

On Sunday, the Harrisonburg Parks and Recreation Department will host a Halloween carnival at the Cecil F. Gilkerson Community Activities Center.

From 2-4 p.m., games, crafts and candy will be available, with a costume contest for children at 3 p.m.

As for traditional trick-or-treating on Oct. 31, the city does not enforce or coordinate a time and asks that you contact your neighbors if you have questions.
