St. John’s Sweeps Dukes

QUEENS, N.Y. – Sophomore right-hander Ryan McCormick struck out seven batters in seven innings, and St. John’s capitalized on two costly miscues in a three-run third inning to finish a three-game sweep of James Madison with a 4-2 win in a non-conference baseball game Sunday.

The Red Storm, who won 7-5 on Saturday, improved to 13-10; the Dukes fell to 8-14.

St. John’s Bret Dennis lifted a sacrifice fly to center that was dropped, allowing two runs to score in the third inning. Dennis later scored on a wild pitch to put St. John’s ahead 3-2.

Catcher Tyler Sanchez added an insurance run on a solo shot in the seventh.

Senior third baseman Ty McFarland tripled and had JMU’s only RBI. JMU sophomore Mark Gunst took the loss after giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits over 6 2/3 innings.

BC Beats Guilford Twice: Junior left-hander Corey Armentrout had six strikeouts and allowed one unearned run over seven innings as Bridgewater College swept Guilford in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader with an 8-1 victory Saturday at BC.

The Eagles, who won the first game 7-4, improved to 13-7 overall, 6-3 in the ODAC; the Quakers fell to 10-12, 4-4.

Sophomore first baseman Brendan Howell led BC with three RBIs, going 2-for-3 with a double. Junior left fielder Derrik Walling and senior shortstop Zach Hynes each added two hits and two runs.

Hampden-Sydney 5, EMU 4: Designated hitter R. Johnson went 2-for-4 with an RBI single that capped a four-run fourth inning as Hampden-Sydney held on to beat Eastern Mennonite University 5-4 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference baseball game Saturday in Park View.

The Tigers improved to 17-5 overall, 2-3 in the ODAC; the Royals dropped to 12-10, 0-7.

Left fielder Kyle Mathews hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth, but EMU couldn’t muster a fifth run to tie the game. Mathews finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored.
