New Cooks Creek Bridge Opens
HARRISONBURG — The Virginia Department of Transportation opened the new bridge over Cooks Creek on Oakwood Drive east of Bridgewater this week, three months ahead of schedule.
Contractor Fairfield-Echols LLC of Fishersville built the two-lane bridge and widened the roadway on both sides for $1.3 million. The structure replaces a one-lane bridge built in 1930 that was too narrow for the amount of traffic passing through, VDOT says.
Construction began in December. A temporary bridge routed motorists around the work zone.
In a Friday press release, VDOT said crews will be painting lines on the new bridge and approaches on Monday. Flaggers will control traffic during the painting and at various other times as contractors remove the temporary bridge and roadway.
All work is weather permitting.
