Editor’s Note: This is the fifth and sixth of 20 profiles of the contestants in the 2013 Regional Spelling Bee sponsored by the Rockingham District Ruritans and co-sponsored by the Daily News-Record and public television station WVPT. The bee will be held at the WVPT studios in Harrisonburg on March 2. Each day, we will introduce the spellers competing for a spot in this year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

Favorite subject: Science. “I like science because I like knowing how things work, and I like being out in nature. I like experimenting.”

Career goals: Biologist. “I like being around rivers and nature, and I like science.”

Hobbies: Photography, hiking, fishing, running, gardening, exploring, camping, reading and art.

Favorite book or author: The “Hatchet” series by Gary Paulsen.

Spelling secrets: “I visualize the word. I ask people the spelling of words when I come across a word I don’t know. I also look over the spelling packet.”

Interesting facts: “I have been to the West Coast and Canada. I am good at photography. I play soccer on a travel team.

Currently lives in: Timberville

Parents: John and Laura Coffman

Favorite Subject: Math. “I enjoy trying to figure hard problems out.”

Career Goals: Meteorologist. “I think it’s amazing to look at the radar and forecasts and to see how other meteorologists keep people aware of what’s happening around them.”

Hobbies: “I love to read, write, sing, swim and spend time with my friends, family and dog.”

Favorite book or author: “My favorite book is ‘Wake’ by Amanda Hocking. My favorite author is James Patterson. My favorite series is ‘Watersong’ by Amanda Hocking.”

Spelling Secrets: “Always practice and study hard. I got good by practicing and studying.”

Interesting Facts: “I’ve had straight A’s since the third grade. I’ve been the top reader in elementary school. This summer I climbed to the highest point in the Smoky Mountains. I’ve been to a lot of our [state’s] border states, except Kentucky. I’ve met George Hirschmann, Alyson Bruner and Erin Hunter.”

Anything else you’d like to say to DN-R readers: “I’ve written two other articles for the North Fork Journal. I have loved writing songs.”
