HARRISONBURG — Harrisonburg police are investigating an assault that occurred early Saturday in off-campus student housing.

Officers were called to the 1500 block of Devon Lane about 1:30 a.m. and found a 20-year-old man with serious injuries, according to a statement from the Harrisonburg Police Department.

The victim, whose name was not released, was taken to Rockingham Memorial Hospital and later flown to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville with head trauma, the statement says. Police did not elaborate on the exact nature or extent of his injuries.

Police are following up on leads and are seeking information from anyone who was in the area at the time of the attack.

Anyone with information is asked to call 434-4436. Tipsters who wish to remain anonymous should call Crime Solvers at 574-5050 or text “HPD” plus the tip to CRIMES (274637).

Police did not say what motive, if any, they believe prompted the assault, such as robbery.

The incident occurred near Foxhill Townhomes in a part of the city where many James Madison University students live.

Theft and other minor crimes are common in off-campus student housing, but occasionally more serious incidents like this morning’s assault happen.

The Daily News-Record will update this story as details become available and will have a full report in Monday’s print and online editions.
