Eagles Beat SHS

ELKTON — Junior right-hander Kayla Harris went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs as East Rockingham defeated Spotswood 7-3 in a high school softball game on Saturday.

The Eagles improved to 4-1; the Trailblazers’ record was not available.

Harris also picked up her first win of the season on the mound. Freshman first baseman Jaclyn Gooden hit a solo home run in the second inning for ERHS.

Sophomore catcher Laura Patterson led SHS, going 2-for-4 with a double.

Helmick Leads Knights To Tournament Title: Sophomore right-hander Natalie Helmick, who threw her first career no-hitter Friday against Tazewell, homered and had four RBIs as Turner Ashby High School defeated Liberty-Bedford 9-0 in the Botetourt Bash championship game Saturday in Troutville.

The Knights, who outscored three opponents 34-0 in the two-day tournament, improved to 6-0.

Helmick picked up her fifth win in the title game and was named the tournament MVP. Junior shortstop Alexa Sheets also homered against Liberty.

Sheets pitched three innings of relief to earn the win in Game 1 on Saturday, a 14-0 victory in five innings over Lancaster (Ohio). TA kicked off the tournament with an 11-0 five-inning win over Tazewell, in which Helmick had six strikeouts and walked one batter.

EMHS 8, Harrisonburg 5: Sophomore catcher Holly Mumaw and sophomore first baseman Carter DePoy each went 3-for-4 with a double as Eastern Mennonite held of Harrisonburg 8-5 in a high school softball game Saturday at EMHS.

The Flames improved to 1-3; the Blue Streaks fell to 0-3. Mumaw finished with three RBIs and DePoy had two. Second baseman Alisa Delgado went 3-for-4 to lead HHS.
