ERHS Qualifies Nine For Region
SWOOPE – Junior heavyweight David Kisling and senior 132-pounder Gavin Baugher each won individual titles as East Rockingham High School placed second at the Conference 36 wrestling tournament Wednesday night.
“It was about what I was expecting, but they definitely brought a new level of intensity that we haven’t seen, but I knew they were capable,” ERHS first-year coach Daniel Sivinski said. “They came to wrestle today.”
With seven individual champions, Wilson Memorial won the conference title with 212 points, ahead of East Rock (161), third-place R.E. Lee (161), Riverheads (135) and Buffalo Gap (115.5).
Kisling improved to 28-0 in the 285-pound weight class. Baugher is now 20-8.
In total, the Eagles will send nine wrestlers to the 2A East regional tournament at Strasburg on Feb. 14-15.
Six of them were conference finalists: Wesley Dean (220-pound weight class), junior Daniel Shifflet (182), senior Clay Morris (170), senior Jeremy Hurt (160), sophomore Christian Munoz (152) and junior Jared Hurt (145).
“Munoz was the fourth seed and he was the only one of our guys who was a fourth seed, and he came back to the championship round,” Sivinski said.
Kisling and Shifflet were both No. 1 seeds.
Also qualifying for regionals for ERHS was sophomore Patrick Nott, a third-place finisher at 113.
