Fire Destroys Vacant Mobile Home

Posted: February 1, 2014

A mobile home and storage building on Old Barn Lane north of Elkton were destroyed Friday when a brush fire spread to the surrounding structures. An abandoned single-story house also was severely damaged, according to fire officials.

A property owner in the 17000 block of Old Barn Lane was burning old brush on the lot to clean it up, said Chief Jeremy Holloway of the Rockingham County Department of Fire and Rescue. The controlled burn got out of hand around 3:45 p.m. and spread to the nearby buildings, causing an estimated $30,000 in damage.

No one was living in the mobile home, Holloway said.

The Elkton, Shenandoah, McGaheysville, Grottoes and Stanley fire departments, Hose Co. No. 4 and Rockingham County responded to the fire. It took about 90 minutes for firefighters to get it under control, Holloway said.

No injuries were reported.
