CHESAPEAKE — The driver of an SUV killed after crashing into a school bus in Chesapeake on Wednesday afternoon has been identified as an Elkton man, according to a report from the Virginian-Pilot on Thursday.
Raymond Balser Jr., 67, died around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday after his eastbound Honda SUV rammed into the side of a school bus carrying children from school as it turned left onto another road, Chesapeake police told the Virginian-Pilot.
The Associated Press reported Wednesday that about 20 of the 25 Western Branch Intermediate School students riding on the Chesapeake Public Schools bus were taken to hospitals. The injuries were believed to not be life threatening.
Police told the Virginian-Pilot that speed is believed to be a factor in the crash.
Representatives from the Chesapeake Police Department could not be reached for comment Thursday afternoon.
