Marymount Ousts EMU

NEWPORT NEWS — Eastern Mennonite University delivered its worst offensive performance at the worst possible time.

The Royals put up a season-low point total in a 55-42 loss to Marymount University in the first round of the Division III NCAA women’s basketball tournament Friday.

EMU shot 31.9 percent from the field, 22.2 percent from 3-point range and 47.6 percent from the free-throw line. The Royals’ struggles were enough for Marymount to overcome its own 33 percent shooting day.

“We had a great season that came to a screeching halt tonight,” EMU coach Kevin Griffin said, “and the frustration is that we didn’t play up to our capabilities.  I’m proud of what we have accomplished this year, but with all that we have coming back we know we have unfinished business.”

The Royals, after losing to Guilford in the final of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament, were not optimistic that they’d even be in the NCAA tournament, but earned an at-large bid Monday. It was the second tourney appearance in school history for the Royals (21-7).

Tynisha Parks had 13 points and 14 rebounds to lead Marymount, which also got 11 points, eight assists, five rebounds and three steals from guard Katelyn Fischer. Dominique Dickens scored 12 off the bench for the Saints (24-4).

EMU had just one player in double-figures — junior guard Keyla Baltimore. The Bristow native finished with 10 points, five rebounds and three assists.

In addition to its shooting woes, EMU committed 20 turnovers.

Leading 34-31, Marymount used an 8-0 run to lengthen the lead and effectively put away the Royals during the second half.

“I thought Marymount ran their offense very well and we didn‘t rebound or defend very well,” Griffin said.  “The game was played at their pace and we never could get that changed.”
