ERHS Wins In OT

QUICKSBURG – Midway through the third quarter Tuesday, an East Rockingham High School boys’ basketball player threw a pass from near midcourt that deflected off a Stonewall Jackson defender, shot in an upward trajectory and miraculously swished through the hoop.

After some confusion, the officials ruled it a 2-point basket, even though the “shot” came from well outside the 3-point line.

ERHS coach Mark Palmer couldn’t explain why. He also couldn’t explain why the Eagles needed overtime for their 67-64 win, as East Rock’s poor play against Stonewall Tuesday left Palmer and his players befuddled.

After senior guard Tyler Hensley sank a pull-up jumper to force overtime, the game ended with the Eagles dribbling out the game’s final seconds to open Shenandoah District play.

“That’s probably the only smart thing we did that last five minutes,” Palmer said.

After the Eagles (3-4 overall, 1-0 in the Shenandoah) led 35-26 at the half, Stonewall (1-4, 0-1) opened the third quarter with a slow, 12-0 run spanning five minutes that East Rock finally snapped with its miracle pass-turned-shot-turned-basket.

Hensley finished with 18 points, including the jumper from the right wing with 18 seconds left in regulation that forced the extra period.

“I was just really mad at that point,” Hensley said. “We all didn’t play as well as we could have.”

East Rock scored the first five points of overtime to take control.

SJHS junior point guard Colton Harlow scored a game-high 21 points.
