ERHS Wins In OT

Dofflemyer Sparks 62-54 Win

ELKTON — Bryce Dofflemyer has been one of the East Rockingham High School girls’ basketball team’s top 3-pointer shooters all season.

Nothing changed Tuesday in the Conference 36 semifinals.

The sophomore guard hit a 3 from the left wing with a minute and a half to play in overtime that all but sealed top-seeded East Rock’s 62-54 victory over No. 4 Buffalo Gap, sending the Eagles to the final Friday against No. 3 R.E. Lee.

“She’s been our best 3-point shooter all year,” said ERHS coach Paul Comer, whose team will host the final at 7:45 p.m. “I think she’s over 42 percent from the 3-point line. That’s kind of what she does. She actually shoots it better from the 3 than she does from the 2.”

Junior point guard Madison Comer led the Eagles (17-5) with 15 points. Freshman guard Madison Shifflett had 13, and freshman center Lexi Dean had 10.

ERHS, which trailed 29-19 at halftime, forced overtime with a basket with about 19 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Gap turned it over on its final possession of regulation.

The Eagles took the lead in overtime on a baseline jumper from Shifflett, and then Dofflemyer hit her 3, as ERHS outscored the Bison 9-1 in OT.

“It came down to the end of the game, and we just had to go full-court man and get some steals,” Paul Comer said. “And again, I think Dofflemyer’s 3 was critical. We were up two, and she got a 3 that put us up five. … She made the shot that pretty much broke their back.”
