HARRISONBURG — Dawn Evans had her kidney transplant Tuesday, and the former James Madison women’s basketball star is doing well, according to her college coach.

Kenny Brooks said Evans — who was diagnosed with a life-threatening kidney disease in 2009 — had the surgery at Vanderbilt University, about an hour from her hometown in Clarksville, Tenn.

The 24-year-old Evans, who graduated from JMU in 2011, has played professionally in France the past two seasons. She is JMU career scoring leader and led the Dukes to back-to-back Colonial Athletic Association championships in 2010 and 2011.

Brooks said he will visit Evans this weekend when he goes to the NCAA women's basketball tournament Final Four in Nashville.
