LURAY — John Wayne Price, 63, of Luray, was arraigned Thursday in Page County General District Court in connection with a crash that left a Gordonsville man dead and his passenger seriously injured Sunday afternoon

Price is facing charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, felony hit and run and aggravated manslaughter.

Virginia State Police say that Price, driving a 1997 Ford pickup, struck and killed Francis H. Watt Jr., 59, as he rode his Harley-Davidson motorcycle on U.S. 211 at the intersection with U.S. 340 in Luray.

Judge W. Dale Houff presided over Thursday’s arraignment at which defense attorney Bryan Cave requested that Price be subject to a competency exam. Cave’s request delayed a bond hearing for Price until Aug. 14.

According to police, the fatal crash occurred at 4:53 p.m. Sunday when Price, who was westbound on U.S. 211, turned left to head south on U.S. 340 and struck Watt, who was traveling east on U.S. 211.

Watt was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Virginia State Police. His passenger, Margaret B. Watt, 53, was flown to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville with unspecified serious injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.

Price is being held without bond at Page County Jail.
