HARRISONBURG — A Rockingham County woman died Monday morning in a head-on traffic crash in Greene County.

At 8:37 a.m., police were called to the intersection of U.S. 33 and Bull Yearling Road, less than five miles east of the Rockingham County line.

A Honda Civic traveling west crossed the centerline and hit a tractor-trailer heading east, according to a statement from the Virginia State Police.

The driver of the Civic, Shirley N. Manthorne, 29, died at the scene of the crash, police say. She was wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, whom police did not identify, was not injured, but later went to a hospital as a precaution, the statement says.

Neither speed nor alcohol was believed to be a factor in the crash, and no charges are expected to be filed.

Both lanes of U.S. 33 were closed as police investigated the scene of the crash, including the Virginia State Police accident reconstruction team. The highway reopened by 1:45 p.m.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation Monday evening, according to police.
