A New Market family was displaced after the roof of their home burned this afternoon.

New Market Volunteer Fire Company crews responded to 151 Shady Lane after an emergency call was placed at 2:14 p.m. The residents were not home when the fire began, but reported it once they returned.

Flames were visible through the roof, which completely burned, said John Collins, Shenandoah County's public information officer.

The cause of the fire is under investigation; no damage estimate was available.

Other crews that responded to the scene included Shenandoah County Fire and Rescue, Timberville Volunteer Fire Department, Broadway Volunteer Fire Department, Mount Jackson Fire and Rescue, Woodstock Fire Department and Orkney Springs Fire Department.

Edinburg Volunteer Fire Company provided backup at the New Market fire station during the blaze, Collins said.
