About 200 firefighters continue to battle the Neighbor Mountain Fire in Shenandoah National Park today.

The fire, located on Neighbor Mountain in Page County, has grown to nearly 1,800 acres, with about 30 to 40 percent of it contained.

Residents in the area may have seen an increase in smoke in the vicinity of the fire Tuesday as firefighters employed a “burnout” technique, which burns brush in controlled burns near the main fire in an effort to eat up “fuel” and therefore starve the blaze. Officials say they still expect to have the blaze fully contained by July 15.

Meanwhile, firefighters from five states continue to battle the Point 2 forest fire on Massanutten Mountain, between Sherman and Veach gaps in Shenandoah and Warren counties.

The fire, which lies entirely in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests was about 60 percent contained as of Tuesday night. Several crews will spend the Independence Day holiday battling the blaze, which has covered about 1,288 acres.
