Fort Loses Rematch, 60-49

CHARLOTTESVILLE — The Fort Defiance High School boys’ basketball team scored one of its biggest victories of the 2013-14 season when it dealt Western Albemarle its first loss back in December.

On Thursday night, the Warriors achieved the ultimate level of revenge by ending Fort’s hopes of a return trip to the state tournament with a 60-49 victory over the Indians in a Conference 29 semifinal game at Monticello High School.

Senior guards Brendan Crowe (17 points) and Clay Harris (10) were the only Fort players to reach double figures in the loss.

“They played really well, much better than the first time we played this year,” Indians coach Larry Leonard said of the Warriors. “They’ve come a long way, and they deserved to win. They outplayed us a little bit, a lot more physical than we’re used to and it is what it is. We can’t do anything about it.”

Caleb Simmons gave Fort (22-3) its final lead of the game at 33-32 in the third when he buried a 3-pointer from the left corner. But the Warriors (19-5) took control for good in the final period, mounting a 10-0 run to go up 48-37.

Senior guard Chase Stokes led Western Albemarle with 24 points, scoring 22 of them in the second half.

“He’s a real poised player,” Leonard said. “He’s improved his perimeter shooting some. He’s not a great perimeter shooter, but boy he can get the ball to the basket. He’s a dribble-driver and tough to defend off the bounce. … They’ve got a good, solid team, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they go a ways in the tournament next week.”
