NEW: George Wythe Reports Eligibility Violation
3A State Runner-Up Boys' Basketball Team Investigated
HARRISONBURG – George Wythe High School self-reported an eligibility violation regarding a boys’ basketball player to the Virginia High School League and may have to vacate junior varsity games and varsity playoff wins, including a 3A West regional championship.
VHSL assistant director of compliance Tom Dolan said the school’s investigation is ongoing and that the player in question may have been eligible for the varsity postseason. Dolan said any reports of George Wythe vacating its regional title might be premature.
“The school is still investigating and providing information, and we’re trying to help them ascertain whether the student is eligible or not,” Dolan said Friday afternoon by phone. “At first look, the student was probably eligible when he was playing for the varsity team. Any ineligibility appears to be coming prior to that.”
Dolan said that the player in question appears to be a junior varsity call-up for the postseason.
George Wythe lost to Richmond rival John Marshall in the 3A state championship game after beating Spotswood in the state semifinals this past season.
