Goodwill On The Move

Nonprofit Plans To Move East Market Retail Location

Posted: January 17, 2013

HARRISONBURG — As suggested by the “for lease” sign outside the East Market Street building that houses Goodwill, the thrift store will be leaving the property.

But the move won’t be soon and it won’t be far.

The retail location will move sometime next year a few blocks east to 2025 E. Market St. into the former space of Furniture and More.

Lucie Touchton, marketing manager for the Roanoke-based Goodwill Industries of the Valleys, said the transition may take place in late spring or early summer, but it hasn’t been set.

The transition will have no impact on the nonprofit organization’s other retail store in Harrisonburg on South Main Street.

Though Goodwill won’t be moving for a while, Charles Fairchild, who owns the property, said he wants to get a head start on lining up another tenant for 1740 E. Market St.

Fairchild said a few prospective tenants have already looked at the roughly 14,000-square-foot space, which is adjacent to a Firestone tire store.

“Harrisonburg’s a viable market,” he said. “It’s in the path of expansion.”

Goodwill is looking to get better visibility and increase convenience for customers at its new location, Touchton said.

The sales floor at the new location won’t be much larger, she said, but it will undergo renovation.

“It will get a new look,” she said.

One planned change involves building a drive-through to make it easier for people to make donations.

By The Numbers:

Roanoke-based Goodwill Industries of the Valleys, with two retail locations and a workforce development center in Harrisonburg, saw a dramatic increase in the number of people it served over the past several years as the economy turned sour.
