GOP Taxes Living Responsibly

Posted: March 11, 2013

Once again, the General Assembly has made Virginia grist for late-night comedy.

The so-called $100 “hybrid tax” is exactly the wrong tax at the wrong time.

Why drive a hybrid? Certainly not to avoid gas taxes. And not primarily for lower lifetime fuel costs, because at current gas prices, one is not likely to recoup the additional expense of hybrid technology.

For most, driving a hybrid is a symbolic act of individual responsibility to counter our collective negligence on climate change. Voluntarily lowering one’s carbon footprint beckons.

Virginia will punish what most states reward. Its General Assembly, controlled by the GOP — the party of “no new taxes” and “personal responsibility” — has done the indefensible: imposed a tax on living responsibly.
