GOP Won’t Close Oil Company Loopholes

Posted: February 21, 2012

An item in Sunday’s Washington Post showed that Exxon Mobil’s latest quarterly profit was $9.4 billion. Last night’s evening news estimated that the price of gasoline would exceed $4 per gallon within months.

This letter’s purpose is to support the Republican Party’s absolute reluctance to close the billions of dollars in loopholes available to the oil companies. There are also a few idiotic Democrats that side with the Republicans on this matter.

For how can the oil companies succeed if those loopholes are closed?

Re: 30 - Nope, I don't write it off, it's not a Dodge and it precedes the bailout \ union payoff.

And my "shooting iron" is much too short to use as a crutch; I've been thinking about getting a bigger one though...

I'm not a big fan of chrome either.

re 30 you know most cars, even the ones made by a foreign company are actually made in the US.  Toyota, Honda, even BMW have factories in the US of A.

re 29 how so?  am I playing a trick?  I am really curious why folks hate American companies....

Re: 26 How about that "company vehicle" plus fuel which you write off your taxes....any chance that your "company vehicle" is from one of those U.S. automobile/truck manufacturing companies saved by the Bush/Obama bailout? Or is your "company vehicle" foreign made? I'll bet I know.....Your "company vehicle" is a big old Dodge Ram dual wheeled 3/4 ton chrome encrusted roaring diesel with plenty of seat room so you can carry your trusty crutch....shooting iron.

Let's compare Exxon, the second largest corporation in America, to Apple, Inc.  I have never heard anyone complain that Apple was ripping them off.  Exxon had an income of 41.06 billion dollars last year.  Their net profit margin was 8.68%.  Apple Inc. had an income of  32.98 billion dollars.  Their net profit margin was 25.80%.  Exxon has 4.79 billion outstanding shares of stock.  They pay an annual dividend rate of $1.88 to each shareholder.  Apple Inc. does not pay shareholders a dividend.  Which company is overcharging you?

Re: 24 - Zero won't be vetoing anything in a few, a blessedly few, short months. And I thought you were touting bail outs a few weeks ago, you know, Zero "saving the auto industry and stuff".

While I don't have a hybrid, I have something better - a company vehicle that won't fold up like a beer can if I get hit by an unlicensed, undocumented, uninsured individual.

I don't have much concern at the pump either... :)

My current ride is a hybrid and the  price down the street here in Ca is  4.35 already.  I spend around 25 a week  my concern is little at the pump.  And unlike you I have an American auto that wasn't bailed out.                                                                                                                                          As  Your link it's indeed worth a laugh or two.   Although Nebraska has asked that the pipeline be moved Obamba has stated he will veto it                                           Your party can keep that greasy oil money                                                                .Perhaps you can use it to slick your hair back                                                                      I't will be worthless come November.

Re: 22 - So how does cutting subsidies for oil companies result in lower prices at the pump for you?

And no money saved will be used to "balance the budget", it never is. It will simply go to more vote buying entitlement spending.

Here, your Tuesday evening laugh...

re 20    I agree Obamba will be held responsible for the increase just as Bush was. Not the point I was attempting.  You can work your way back down the tree.   I try this again. Oil companies are making record profits and still recieve over 4 billions in subsides.    Why can't some of this be cut to help balance the budget?   Be honest the only explanation is that Republicans recieve over 80% of  big oils donations or support.        The old saying goes like this.        They have you in their pocket.

Average price of regular gasoline in January 2009, when the Kenyan wannabe-messiah assumed his reign:  $1.85/gallon.

That's about half of what we pay today thanks to Obama's 3+ years of failed energy and foreign policies.  Thanks, 'bamster....with every passing day, you lower the bar another notch and make Jimmy Carter look like an economic genius!

re 17 not sure what your point is....

re 15 i'm fine with cutting subs...most subs come from tax incentatives...we need to reform the tax code....the direct subs, usually go to R&D and i'm fine with cutting them too.

I'm also fine with Corp America getting richer...that means more dividends to stockholders...bigger returns on my retirement investments.  Do you not want more from your 401K or Pension?  and who else is suppose to pay for if it's not American customers?  I mean foreign customers?  Sure...I don't care who is paying, as long as they are paying for the service or good they want.

re 18 I agree...put solar panels on your car...actually develop a solar panel car that works good and try to market it and maybe make yourself a Corporation.  Get rich.  If it works well and you have a good business plan I'll be happy to invest.

Re: 15 - I don't mind the subsidies if you don't mind the higher price at the pump.

Bottom line, we need to develop our own resources and lessen our dependency on those who don't exactly have our best interests in mind.

Failing to do so is simply short sighted and stupid.

Either way, whining about the evils of big oil isn't going to save Zero in November.

The point is we have let them increase production and profits and it resulted in an increased price at the pump. You like to see corporate America getting richer and Americans paying for it?  Can you make a case why they need 4 billion in subsides?   Have you peeps gave upon cutting the budget?

it's true they production began to rise again in 2009, but it was still below 2003 levels....and coming off five years of low production numbers.  at least according to politifact....http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2011/mar/15/barack-obama/barack-obama-says-us-oil-production-last-year-was-/

t
he website had to downgrade the President statement because the same source that you are siting actually claims just the opposite as what you are claiming....that will be decrease in production....and i'm not sure where they got the 1940 date.

http://oilprice.com/Energy/Energy-General/U.S.-To-Increase-Oil-Production-and-Begin-Mining-Rare-Earth-Minerals.html  No Just You.      Two more links.                                      If you have some data that disproves this show me.   Are you ever right about anything?  The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) is reporting U.S. daily crude oil production was 5.891 million barrels of oil per day for the week of October 14, 2011. A look at the EIAs chart of weekly U.S. crude production back to January of 1983 shows a slow production fall over two decades. But since January of 2009 the climb back has been steady rising from under 5 million barrels per day to now closing in on 6 million.

For all you fools that say increased production in US will drive down prices       All  The   Drill Baby Drill peeps were wrong.                                                    .After declining to levels not seen since the 1940s, U.S. crude production began rising again in 2009. Drilling rigs have rushed into the nation's oil fields, suggesting a surge in domestic crude is on the horizon.

The number of rigs in U.S. oil fields has more than quadrupled in the past three years to 1,272, according to the Baker Hughes rig count. Including those in natural gas fields, the United States now has more rigs at work than the entire rest of the world

re 5 interesting...i like the article about producing more of our own fuel.  brings up excellent points.

i couldn't find the article talking about $5, but I'll take your word that the think tank said so.  I wonder does that $5 include taxes?  or just a base?  we are actually paying close to that today, with taxes.

how would the oil companies succeed if the tax loopholes were closed?  easily.

the problem with the Corp tax isn't the loopholes, but the high rate and double taxation.  Look for the Govt to hopefully streamline corp taxes for the solution.

Re 1: If oil weren't subsidized by your government, we'd pay $5+ per gallon at the pump and similarly higher costs for other things.  As a result, consumers' demand for alternatives would increase, not decrease.   The winner: the environment.
1.  RE: GOP Won’t Close Oil Company Loopholes
February 21, 2012 @ 5:06am
The question is not how oil companies would succeed, but rather how the U.S. Treasury would survive.  The oil and gas industry pays about 86 million dollars per day to the federal government in royalties, federal lease rents and tax revenue.  And state/local taxes is another story in itself.

If you want tax loopholes and incentives elimated, do it on all forms of energy, and every other type of industry.  Wind energy, ethanol, etc. would be elimated in a New York minute.
