Gravels Road Crash Leads To DUI Charge

Sheriff: Collision Led To Power Outage

Posted: November 1, 2013

HARRISONBURG — The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office charged a Weyers Cave man with several counts related to a Wednesday night crash that briefly knocked out power just north of Harrisonburg.

At about 8:30 p.m., deputies responded to the 600 block of Gravels Road for a reported crash. A 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass Sedan had struck a Dominion Virginia Power pole, which led to a power outage in the area, a press release from Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson says.

The vehicle and pole were split in half, and the driver had fled on foot before the sheriff’s office arrived.

After a search, David Valentine, 24, of Weyers Cave, was found near the intersection of Gravels and Kratzer roads and taken to Rockingham Memorial Hospital for injuries sustained in the crash. His mug shot from Rockingham County Jail shows him unable to open his right eye and having a large bump on his forehead.

The Harrisonburg Police Department and Virginia State Police assisted in the search.

Police believe alcohol and speed were factors in the crash, the release says.

Valentine was charged with two counts of destruction of property, driving under the influence of alcohol and failure to wear a seat belt.

He is being held without bond at Rockingham County Jail.
