HPD Promotes Two Officers
Drugo, Hammer Named Corporals
HARRISONBURG — The Harrisonburg Police Department has promoted master police officers Scott Drugo and Rachel Hammer to the rank of corporal in the patrol division.
“I think their past experience … both bring military experience to the table … and their diversity in the department will make them good leaders,” said HPD’s Lt. Kurt Boshart on Drugo and Hammer’s promotion, which took effect Sunday.
Drugo, a former Turner Ashby High School teacher, has been with the department since 2003, serving most recently as a bike officer. He serves as a bicycle-training instructor and is a member of the crash reconstruction team and civil disturbance unit.
A captain with the Army National Guard, he has been deployed several times, including to Kosovo.
Hammer joined the department in April 2006. Before joining the HPD, she was a U.S. Capitol Police officer.
She started on patrol with HPD and later became the community resource officer in the crime prevention unit.
In addition to her current duties, she is a crisis negotiator and Crisis Intervention Team member.
Hammer, a first sergeant and drill instructor with the Army Reserves, has been deployed to Iraq twice.
With the two promotions, the department fills one corporal vacancy and created an opening within the ranks. The HPD has a total workforce of more than 100, including both civilian employees and sworn officers.
