HARRISONBURG — A Staunton motorcyclist died on Interstate 81 early Saturday after he was struck by two vehicles, according to the Virginia State Police.

At 1:16 a.m., Samuel L. Crowe, 59, was southbound on his 2003 Harley-Davidson at mile marker 254, about five miles north of Harrisonburg in Rockingham County, when he was hit first by a tractor-trailer and then by a passenger vehicle, state police Sgt. F.L. Tyler said. Crowe died at the scene, police said.

Details of what led to the first collision have not been released by police, who were continuing their investigation as of Sunday.

Ronnie R. Richardson, 25, of Roanoke, was operating the truck, a 2001 International, while Edward Hutchins, 46, of Irvington, N.J., was driving the car, a 2007 Cadillac.

Tyler noted that it was raining at the time of the incident, but it was unclear if that had been a factor in the wreck.
