HARRISONBURG— A sudden snow squall that reduced visibility and slickened roads led to at least three major wrecks on Interstate 81 in or near Harrisonburg — including this morning’s massive pileup that involved 28 cars and at least four tractor-trailers.
About a dozen people were taken to Rockingham Memorial Hospital with mostly minor injuries, according to Harrisonburg Fire Chief Larry Shifflett.
Both sides of Interstate 81 are now open but motorists should continue to expect some delays.
The main wreck happened on the southbound side at mile marker 243, near the last Harrisonburg exit before re-entering Rockingham County.
A wreck involving five vehicles occurred about a half-mile north of the main pileup and a third involving three to four vehicles was reported on I-81 south of the city.
This morning’s freak weather, which Shifflett said dumped two to three inches of snow on parts of the city “in a very short period of time,” also caused dozens of fender benders and other mostly minor wrecks throughout Harrisonburg.
