Kaine Wrong On Keystone

Posted: June 27, 2013

We find it interesting that Sen. Tim Kaine, in a commentary on Friday for The Washington Post, takes great pains to trumpet his support for traditional energy sources — that is, before he bashes the Keystone XL pipeline.

That’s called playing both ends against the middle — and many politicians excel at it.

Mr. Kaine’s reason for opposing the project? The kind of product (tar sands oil) the pipeline will convey is dirtier than conventional petroleum and harder to extract.

Lost in this reasoning? The pipeline is a great project with a great partner (Canada) that will create many new jobs and serve our northern oil fields as well as Canada’s. Finally, what we’re talking about here is an efficient, non-polluting way to transport product — product, by the way, Canada intends to extract and transport, with or without our participation.
