TIMBERVILLE — The identity of the lucky person who won a $2 million Powerball prize from a ticket purchased at the Timberville Food Lion will be revealed at a press conference Thursday at the store.
Virginia Lottery officials will present the winner with a $2 million ceremonial check during the 1 p.m. gathering at 14054 Timber Way.
The ticket-holder matched the first five numbers in the April 17 Powerball drawing, missing only the Powerball number. Matching all six numbers would have meant a cool $80 million jackpot, but a $2 million consolation prize isn’t too shabby.
Matching the first five numbers is usually good for $1 million but because the local winner paid an extra dollar for the “Power Play” option, the prize was doubled. Power Plays increase non-jackpot winnings by a factor of two — which was the case with the April 27 drawing — three or four. Powerball tickets without the Power Play are $2 each.
