CHESTERFIELD (AP) — A Chesterfield County man faces charges of bringing a handgun into an elementary school. The man, 33-year-old Michael S. Berry, was at the school to pick up his daughter and said he was not aware that carrying a gun onto school property is illegal, according to police.
Berry was carrying the 9mm handgun in a holster on his side when he walked into A.M. Davis Elementary School last week. Berry left the school without incident, although it is not clear if school officials asked him to leave or waited until he had left to notify authorities.
He is charged with possession of a firearm on school property.
Virginia law allows citizens to openly carry firearms in most public places. Restrictions include schools and courthouses.
